Brachydactylous Dwarfism Mseleni Type

Brachydactylous Dwarfism Mseleni Type (MJD) is a rare condition that affects the bones and joints. The major joints affected are hip, knee, and ankle. The spine is also often affected. This condition is characterized by short stature, short fingers and toes (brachydactyly), and low bone density (osteopenia). Affected patients may be seriously handicapped as adults. This condition has affected several hundred people in Northern Zuzuland and South Africa. The cause is unknown, although the condition clusters in families. Management include pain relievers, and possibly hip-replacement to improve mobility.
