Cerebellar Astrocytoma, Childhood

Childhood Cerebellar Astrocytoma is a condition in which benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumors form in the tissues of the brain. About 15-25% of childhood brain cancers are cerebellar astrocytomas. Symptoms depend on the child’s age and the location of the tumor, and may include: loss of balance, trouble walking, worsened handwriting, slow speech, morning headache, nausea, vomiting, unusual sleepiness, and change in personality and behavior. A physician usually considers this diagnosis based on symptoms and a physicial exam. Cerebellar astrocytoma can be diagnosed using CT scans and MRIs. Treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.
