Cerebral Palsy Spastic Hemiplegic

Common Name(s)

Cerebral Palsy Spastic Hemiplegic

Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common form of cerebral palsy. Hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy affects the arm, hand and sometimes leg of one side of the body in 20-30% of cerebral palsy patients. Symptoms may include shorter and thinner arm or leg on the affected side of the body, along with weakness and rigidity of muscles. Intelligence is most often normal, although speech might be impaired. The extent of symptoms depends on the amount of damage to the brain incurred, and therefore symptoms will vary from patient to patient. Spastic hemiplegia typically occurs either at birth or in the womb.
