De Quervains' Disease

Common Name(s)

De Quervains' Disease

De Quervains' disease, also known as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, is a condition that affects the tendons (bands connecting muscle and bone) on the thumb side of your wrist. This condition makes it painful to grasp anything in your hand or turn your wrist. Signs and symptoms may include: pain or swelling near the base of the thumb, difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, and a ‘stop-and-go’ feeling in the thumb. This condition may be caused by overuse, inflammatory joint pain (rheumatoid arthritis), or direct injury to the tendon. De Quervains' disease is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50, and affects women more often than men. Diagnosis will include a physical examination, and rarely, imaging tests such as X-rays. Treatment may include medications to reduce pain and therapy, physical or occupational therapy, and in the more serious cases, surgery. Without treatment, the pain can spread into the rest of the thumb or into the forearm.
