Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Common Name(s)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually the legs. The main symptoms of DVT are swelling and/or pain in the affected leg or no symptoms at all. A physician can diagnose DVT during a physical and with follow up tests like blood and imaging tests, such as an ultrasound. Treatment for DVT is aimed at preventing the clot from getting bigger and preventing the clot from breaking loose and blocking blood flow in the lungs, which is called a pulmonary emobolism and can be life-threatening. Treatment usually involves medications like blood thinners, but can also include compression stockings worn to prevent swelling from DVT and surgical intervention if needed.
