Degenerative Disk Disease

Common Name(s)

Degenerative Disk Disease

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is not exactly a disease but a term to describe the normal changes to the spine as you age. This condition commonly affects young adults and middle-aged people who lead active lifestyles. Symptoms of DDD vary from person to person, many people experience no back or neck pain, while others experience severe pain that interferes with their daily life. Symptoms tend to become more severe as the disease intensifies with age. A physician can diagnose DDD by taking into account medical history and conducting a physical exam. Imaging studies like an x-ray or an MRI may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Disc degeneration cannot be reversed; therefore treatment plans focus on limiting future degeneration. Medication is commonly used to manage pain caused by DDD. Physical therapy or chiropractic manipulation may also be helpful. Surgery may be recommended if non-surgical methods do not work and pain is severe.
