Diabetes

Common Name(s)

Diabetes

Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body controls your blood glucose, or blood sugar. Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, feeling very thirsty and hungry (even when you are drinking and eating), feeling very tired, blurry vision, cuts and bruises that heal slowly, weight loss, as well as tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands and/or feet. Onset can take place at any time in an individual’s life, and can occur during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) even if the woman has never been diagnosed with diabetes before. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, there are various methods available to help monitor and manage blood-glucose (sugar) levels, depending upon which type of diabetes you are diagnosed with. Diagnosis with this condition typically requires lifelong management. Failure to appropriately manage blood sugar levels can ultimately lead to major complications including severe infections, blindness and heart disease.
