Ductal carcinoma in situ

Common Name(s)

Ductal carcinoma in situ, Ductal carcinoma in situ, noninvasive breast cancer

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer or pre-cancer. In DCIS, abnormal cells are present inside the milk ducts in the breast, but these cells have not spread through the duct walls into the neighboring breast tissue. If untreated, these abnormal cells have the opportunity to develop into invasive breast cancer. DCIS is most commonly detected during a mammogram and accounts for approximately 1 in 5 new breast cancer cases. Although not life-threatening, treatment is required to prevent the condition from becoming invasive.
