Hemorrhagic proctocolitis

Common Name(s)

Hemorrhagic proctocolitis

Hemorrhagic proctocolitis is a condition characterized by inflammation and consequent bleeding of the rectum and colon (the final section of the gastrointestinal tract where stool is stored between bowel movements). Common symptoms include blood and mucus in stool, diarrhea and anemia, which occurs when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells. The onset of hemorrhagic proctocolitis can be sudden, but its course tends to be chronic. A physician can confirm a diagnosis of hemorrhagic proctocolitis using stool samples and lab tests. Treatment depends on the underlying condition causing bleeding and inflammation within the colon and rectum.
