Herpes virus antenatal infection

Common Name(s)

Herpes virus antenatal infection

Herpes virus antenatal infections occur when the virus is transmitted from an infected pregnant woman to her fetus or newborn baby. A baby can get the virus from the uterus (rare), by passing through the birth canal, or through contact with herpes mouth sores after being born. Herpes virus can cause genital warts and mouth sores in men and women. Although symptoms can be treated for with medication, there is no cure for herpes. The virus can become dormant in its host for different amounts of time causing outbreaks of symptoms triggered by stress, trauma to the affected area, illness, fatigue, weakening of the immune system. Even if the virus is dormant, it can still be passed onto newborns. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant and have herpes in order to avoid a herpes virus antenatal infection in your newborn.
