Hypospadias

Common Name(s)

Hypospadias

Hypospadias is a birth defect in which the urethra (the tube that drains urine from the bladder) is abnormally located on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. It is typically diagnosed at birth, but less severe hypospadius can potentially go overlooked. Hypospadias is caused by an inbalance of hormones required for normal development of the urethra. Treatment involves surgery to reposition the urethra, most commonly resulting in normal appearance and function of the penis.
