Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy (LVNC)

Common Name(s)

Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy (LVNC)

Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy (LVNC) is a heart condition characterized by muscle tissue extending into the left lower heart chamber. The excess muscle tissue can cause the chamber to change from smooth to hard and solid, making it harder to contract that part of the heart. Individuals with this heart condition thus may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, abnormal heart beats, and unexplained weight gain or swelling. Individuals will also be more prone to cardiac arrest. The condition can be found in both children and adults. Doctors diagnose this heart condition with cardiac tests such as an echocardiogram. Treatment is developed on a case-by-case basis and depends on the specific needs of the patients. Doctors may adminster anti-clotting drugs to help reduce the risk of blood clots forming in the heart and will suggest individuals lead a healthier lifestyle (exercise and diet).
