Nonverbal learning disorder

Common Name(s)

Nonverbal learning disorder

Nonverbal learning disorder (NLD), or nonverbal learning disability, is a disorder where a child may have high verbal (speaking) skills, but low motor (moving) skills. They may have difficulty with math and reading, especially as tasks become complex. NLD is a disorder in the brain and is sometimes associated with Asperger syndrome because children with NLD and children with Asperger syndrome can have trouble understanding humor. Even though a child with NLD may have high verbal skills, they are good at repeating what they hear others say but not at understanding what other people say to them, making humor (jokes) difficult for them to understand. They tend to take words literally. Due to children with NLD having trouble understanding the meaning of what other people say to them, they may begin to feel isolated in later elementary school and early middle school. Additionally, people with NLD sometimes realize they are not good at communicating with other people and it causes them a lot of anxiety because they fear offending people. Talk with your doctor to find the best treatment for you if you have been diagnosed with NLD.
