Retinopathy of prematurity

Common Name(s)

Retinopathy of prematurity

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a condition in which there is abnormal blood vessel development in the retina of the eye in a premature infant. The risk of developing ROP depends on the degree of prematurity, with the smallest and sickest babies generally having the highest risk. There are five stages of ROP ranging from mildly abnormal blood vessel growth, moderately abnormal, severely abnormal, severely abnormal and a partially detached retina, to total retinal detachment. In severe cases, symptoms may include abnormal eye movements, crossed eyes, severe nearsightedness, and white-looking pupils.
