Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC)

Common Name(s)

Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC), Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR)

Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC), also referred to as Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR), is a birth defect that affects the veins leading from the lungs to the heart. If you have this condition, the veins from the lungs connect to the heart in abnormal places, so blood can enter or leak into chambers it is not supposed to. The cause of TAPVC is unknown, but other heart conditions may be present along with this one. This condition can be detected if the skin appears bluish at birth (because the body is not getting enough oxygen), or if a doctor can hear a heart murmur during a routine checkup. TAPVC usually requires open-heart surgery soon after birth, in which the lung veins are reconnected to the upper left chamber of the heart, where they are supposed to be.
