Transplacental infections

Common Name(s)

Transplacental infections

Transplacental infections occur when an embryo or fetus receives an infection from the mother through the placenta. The placenta develops during pregnancy to provide the developing fetus with gas exchange (taking away cabon dioxide and adding oxygen), nutrient uptake (the food the baby needs to develop and grow), and waste elimination. Since these processes occur via the mother's blood supply, any infections in her blood can be easily transferred to the baby's blood system, infecting the baby in the process.
