Uterine Fibroid

Common Name(s)

Uterine Fibroid, Uterine Leiomyoma

Uterine fibroids, also called leiomyomas or myomas, are growths in the uterus that frequently appear during childbearing years. These growths are noncancerous and develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus. These fibroids are not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer and almost never develop into cancer. Symptoms are usually not present, but in women who do have symptoms, symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, constipation, or backache or leg pains.
