The Duffy blood group system contains a protein on red blood cells that act as a receptor to chemicals in the body that cause inflammation. The body does not recognize this antigen and can trigger an adverse immune response in the body. Blood transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) may occur due to this type of inflammation. The duffy blood group most commonly occurs in people of Caucasian and Chinese ethnicity.
If your child has been diagnosed with a duffy blood group, talk with your doctor about the most current treatment options. Support groups are also good resources of support and information.
